What few fans realize, though, is how lucrative college football can be for their respective university. Many people love watching college football on the weekends or going to support their team during big games. Read my new sci-fi thriller novel Herokiller, available now in print and online. But I’ll keep playing new updates as they come, and we’ll see what’s in store for the long-term future of the series.įollow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Free is good, but piecemeal content is often not terribly engaging, and we’ll see some evidence of that by a fractional amount of players returning for today’s matchmaking-free raid. We’ll see how The Division 2 does over the long term, but I am not sure how I feel about this ‘free roadmap” idea of continuing content over more traditional DLC releases, which worked well in the first game. As someone who is notoriously critical of loot shooters and their various problems, The Division 2 has impressed me more often than not. So again, I do have to call into question what Ubisoft’s expectations were here in the first place to put faith in the idea that The Division 2 is somehow a disappointment overall. It especially was compared favorably to its competition like Destiny and Anthem, and what issues it did or does have, are relatively minor in the grand scheme of things, inventory clutter, skill power problems, etc. It brought over a ton of the lessons learned from the first game, and launched in a very solid state with a robust endgame in place and few technical difficulties that plague other titles in the genre. While The Division 1 went on to be supported in major ways through DLC and patches that greatly improved the game, I know at least a lot of casual players who still have a poor impression overall of the game if they didn’t stick around that long, and that may have carried over to a lack of enthusiasm for the sequel.ĭespite this, I really can’t bring myself to say anything bad about the way The Division 2 launched. The Division 1 had a checkered history, as many of the people who bought the game and helped make it the fastest-selling new IP in history ended up not liking the state of it by the end, as it arrived without any real sort of endgame and always had a relentless focus on the always-controversial Dark Zone. Was The Division 2 supposed to double the sales of The Division 1? Who knows, but if it was some lofty goal like that, it’s not terribly realistic. Part of this is the old “expectations” game where in this case, we don’t even know what Ubisoft was expecting from The Division 2 sales, and so we don’t know how realistic that was or if it was a big deal that the sequel missed the mark. It may be good content, but it’s an activity only a small part of the playerbase is actually going to partake in and complete. That has left players scrambling to find places to LFG they’ve never had to use before, or more likely, skipping the raid entirely because it’s gone from something they could pop into to try out to an activity that requires a lot of work to organize. Players have not been amused that after implying that all game activities would have matchmaking, the first 8-player raid, debuting later today, would not. The Raid – I think Ubisoft is going to be in for a surprise if they think that the raid is going to be the thing to increase The Division 2’s fortunes.

This sounds good when you phrase it the way they did, but means nothing.

Uplay – This one is just hilarious because what isn’t being mentioned here is that the reason for a 10 fold increase in Uplay sales was because of the deal with the Epic Games store that led a ton of players to simply download it from Uplay rather than use EGS as an intermediary. The Division 2 practically had this month to itself. Past that, other than the general sense of battle royale games continuing to be popular ( Fortnite, and this was a month and a half after Apex Legends came out), I really don’t understand what Ubisoft is talking about here. Destiny 2’s Season of the Drifter was starting to spool up around then, but it was hardly some atomic bomb of a content update, and if anything, all anyone was saying at the time was how favorably The Division 2’s debut compared to Destiny.

Citing “fierce competition in the market,” Ubisoft’s CFO Frederick Dugeut said that the game fell short of sales expectations on console, though he cited a 10 fold increase in Uplay sales on PC as a silver lining, and said that the game’s next update, its raid, is expected to do well for it.įierce Competition – I have been racking my brain and genuinely can’t think of what other games would be in direct competition with The Division 2 when it was released in the middle of March.
