My preference is the clean white panel with the nice contrast of the blue cabinet. User preference comes into play when the "look" of an instrument is under consideration. Most of the knobs were replaced with new units. A powder coat finish was used, as before. The original front panel is shown on the left, along with the replacement polycarbonate overlay on the right.

The IO 4515 front panel artwork is available as an AI or PDF file. As such, use of the polycarbonate overlay made for a clean, uncomplicated installation. The original front panel color and legends were contained on a plastic insert. I have come to prefer the look of the all-white front panel over the two-tone (white and blue) of the original instrument. As with the other restorations, the case was given a powder coat finish. The photo on the right shows the instrument on a roll-around stand. The front panel for this instrument is somewhat complex, but manageable.

The IM 5258 front panel artwork is available as an Adobe Illustrator ( AI) file or Adobe Acrobat ( PDF) file. In a couple of instances, however, a second panel run was required to get it right. Nearly all of the front panels done so far (and documented on this page) were first versions. The case panels were done in a powder coat finish. As with the IM 5248 project, the original front panel was scanned and reproduced in Adobe Illustrator. This work is time-consuming, and expensive. The end goal of this work is to refurbish nearly all test equipment on the bench to the style developed for the IM 5248. These vary by vendor, but in the case of MPC, the cost for producing two overlays was about the same as for producing 10 when the minimum job price was taken into consideration.
Like most custom items, the manufacturing setup is not insignificant and therefore vendors typically have minimum job price points. For most restoration projects, the polycarbonate overlay represents the major expense. As detailed on the IM 5248 page, the overlay is just that-a piece that overlays the aluminum front panel. The overlay is far superior in resistance to wear and fading than the original silkscreened panels. The polycarbonate overlay is an excellent way to immensely improve the look of the instrument. The cabinet finishes were done by a local powder coat vendor. In all cases, the front panels have been made new through use of a polycarbonate overlay produced by Metalphoto of Cincinnati (MPC). The focus of this page is largely cosmetic that is, the external appearance of the instruments. At the most basic level, restorations involve: 1) cleaning the instrument, 2) repair of the electronics, 3), cabinet refinishing, 4) remaking the front panel, and 5) alignment and checkout. The process followed for each instrument is largely the same, as illustrated on the IM 5248 page. A number of refurbishment projects have been completed on Heathkit test equipment over the years.
